TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH

Born Clinic healthcare professionals believe that every patient deserves to be in control of their health. For close to 40 years, we have focused on integrating the best emerging practices with tried-and-tested techniques from conventional medicine to uncover the root causes of our patients' symptoms.

Our Practice

Dr. Grant Born founded The Born Preventive Health Care Clinic in 1982 after receiving a poor prognosis for recovery from heart failure. He pioneered the principles of preventive medicine and developed the approach to medical care that continues to be our focus almost 40 years later. After his passing in 1998, his partner and wife, Dr. Tammy Born Huizenga, assumed leadership of the clinic.

The Born Clinic was created to be an institution of preventive medicine with a focus on centering patient care and providing access to medical science and information that has not yet been fully incorporated into conventional medicine. The Born Clinic has grown from a family practice to an internationally respected organization in preventive medicine. Our team of compassionate practitioners strive to stay on the leading edge of innovative thinking in medical care as we serve nearly 10,000 patients annually.

Tammy Born Huizenga, D.O.

Physician

Tammy is a trailblazer in integrative and preventive medicine, with over 37 years of experience as a physician and the owner of Born Clinic in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Long before functional medicine gained widespread recognition, Tammy championed a proactive, personalized approach to healthcare that focuses on preventing and reversing chronic conditions rather than simply managing symptoms.

As one of the first physicians in the Midwest to implement a comprehensive functional medicine model, Tammy has been at the forefront of integrating conventional and innovative approaches to patient care. Today, she leads a team that serves over 9,000 unique patients annually, coming from over 40 States of the US, offering advanced diagnostic and genomic testing, infusion and injection therapies, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and musculoskeletal therapies.

Driven by a lifelong passion for empowering individuals to take control of their health, Tammy believes addressing the root causes of illness through evidence-based functional medicine practices can create a healthier, more vibrant society. Ultimately reducing the overall burden on the healthcare system. Her expertise has earned her the trust of national leaders and numerous public service appointments. Tammy served on the Michigan Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery for Eight (8) years and as President for Three (3) of those years (1999-2001). Tammy was appointed twice by President George W. Bush to national healthcare advisory roles. Most recently, she served on the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Integrative Health (2018–2023), appointed by Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar.

Beyond her work as a board-certified family practice physician, Tammy is committed to advancing the field of functional medicine through mentorship and research. She has trained countless healthcare practitioners and contributed to groundbreaking studies, including the NIH-funded trial assessing chelation therapy and the FDA-approved clinical trial on mercury toxicity and heavy metal detoxification.

Tammy also dedicates time to Michigan’s business and civic community, serving on organizations such as the Grand Valley State University Foundation and the West Michigan Policy Forum.

Dr. Tammy Born, Medical Director

COMMON CONDITIONS BORN CLINIC HELPS MANAGE

Autoimmune Diseases

Autoimmune Disease

In the case of an autoimmune disease, the immune system does not distinguish between healthy tissue and antigens, causing the body to set off a reaction that attacks and destroys healthy body tissue by mistake.

Age-Related Issues

Age-Related Issues

As bodies age, many medical conditions become more common and/or more serious. Advanced aging affects bone, joint, muscle, and dental health, the cardiovascular and digestive systems, memory, eyesight, and hearing, as well as hormone levels and sexual function.

Chronic Fatigue

Chronic Fatigue

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a debilitating disorder that is characterized by extreme fatigue that does not go away with rest. CFS impacts multiple systems of the body, making daily activities difficult and decreasing the quality of life of those affected.

Chronic Allergies

Chronic Allergies

An immune response to allergens like food, inhalants, insects/animals, medications, and synthetics. Common symptoms come and go but include obesity, headaches, joint pain, skin rashes, sinus problems, depression, and fatigue. Treatment for chronic allergies usually begins with food sensitivity testing followed by the elimination of reactive foods for 60-90 days.

Chronic Pain Syndromes

Chronic Pain Syndromes

Pain is part of the body’s defense system against injury—it brings our attention to the need to protect ourselves. Chronic pain occurs when this system is working incorrectly, either by sending pain signals in the absence of damage or threat, or by exaggerating the signals it sends in the presence of an enduring or old injury. Pain takes many forms, including headaches or migraines, lower back, cancer, or arthritis pain, neurogenic pain (which results from nerve damage), or psychogenic pain (pain occurring without any visible sign of damage or past injury).

Diabetes

Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition in which the body is unable to correctly utilize sugar. Nearly 10 million Americans live with it, although 1 in 4 are unaware of their condition. Despite the lack of a cure, physicians at Born Clinic help patients manage the condition by utilizing traditional medical treatments supplemented by dietary controls and chelation.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death is the United States. The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD), which affects the small vessels that supply blood to the heart itself, and is the major cause of heart attacks. There may be problems associated with other systems of the heart, including arrhythmias (which affect the electrical conduction system and cause the heart to beat irregularly), heart valve disease, cardiomegaly (increase in heart size that affects its ability to pump blood), and heart failure. While heart disease can be deadly, it is also preventable in most cases. For patients with a heart condition, adopting healthy habits can go a long way in preventing its progression.
